This section covers three-dimensional coordinates, column vectors and the perpendicular unit vectors i, j and k.

Three components, three directions

A three-dimensional vector has components in the $x$ -, $y$ - and $z$ -directions. It can describe a displacement in space or, when it starts at the origin, the position of a point.

The coordinate axes are mutually perpendicular. The vectors $\mathbf i$ , $\mathbf j$ and $\mathbf k$ point along the positive $x$ -, $y$ - and $z$ -axes respectively, and each has magnitude $1$ .

Column notation and unit-vector notation carry the same information:

\mathbf a=\begin{pmatrix}x\\y\\z\end{pmatrix}=x\mathbf i+y\mathbf j+z\mathbf k.

The third entry is the $z$ -component; keep the order $x$ , $y$ , $z$ in every calculation.

The axes are perpendicular in space, even though the sketch is drawn on a flat page.

Read coordinates and signs

For example,

$\overrightarrow{AB}=\begin{pmatrix}3\\7\\-2\end{pmatrix}=3\mathbf i+7\mathbf j-2\mathbf k.$

This displacement changes $x$ by $3$ , $y$ by $7$ and $z$ by $-2$ . It does not, by itself, give the coordinates of $B$ : those depend on the starting point $A$ .

If the same vector is $\overrightarrow{OP}$ , with $O$ the origin, then $P$ has coordinates $(3,7,-2)$ .
