questions

Monomers & Polymers

Biologists use the term monomer when describing the structure of many biological molecules.
State what is meant by a monomer.

A monomer is a smaller molecule/unit that can be joined to other monomers to form a larger molecule or polymer.

State what is meant by a polymer.

A polymer is a large molecule made from many monomer units joined together.

Name two examples of biological monomers.

Names one valid biological monomer: monosaccharide, amino acid or nucleotide.

Names a second different valid biological monomer: monosaccharide, amino acid or nucleotide.

A student states:

Any large biological molecule must be a polymer.

Explain why the definition of a polymer does not support this statement.

Explains that a polymer must be made from many joined monomer units, so being a large molecule alone does not show that a molecule is a polymer.
