Projectile Models

State the gravity-only model and its physical limitations.

After launch, only weight acts

Model the projectile as a particle moving in a vertical plane. Neglect air resistance and aerodynamic effects of spin; take gg as constant and vertically downward. The model describes free flight until the projectile lands or hits an obstacle.

a=−gj\mathbf a=-g\mathbf j

There is no horizontal acceleration, so horizontal velocity stays constant. Vertical velocity changes at rate −g-g when upward is positive. These motions share the same elapsed time. With a non-zero horizontal component, the trajectory is a parabola.
