Decide what the model includes
A mechanics model replaces a physical situation with objects, forces and equations. State the assumptions that make those equations valid, then interpret the solution in the original situation.
| Assumption | Consequence |
|---|---|
| Particle | Ignore the object’s dimensions and rotation; represent its mass at one point. |
| Rigid rod or beam | Its length and shape do not change; forces may act at different points. |
| Uniform rod | Mass is evenly distributed along its length, so its weight acts at its midpoint. |
| Light string or rod | Neglect the connector’s mass. |
| Inextensible string | Its length stays fixed. When taut in a simple fixed-pulley system, the particles have equal speeds and acceleration magnitudes. |
| Smooth surface | There is no friction at that contact. |
| Smooth pulley with a light string | The tension has the same magnitude on both sides. |
| Negligible air resistance | Omit air resistance as a force. |
| Constant gravity | Use constant downward acceleration , normally unless specified. |
