Absolute electric potential, , at a point is the work done per unit positive test charge in bringing that charge from infinity to the point.

Positive and negative charges
Positive source charge

- Moving closer to the charge increases .
- Moving further away decreases towards zero.
Negative source charge
- The potential is negative.
- Moving closer makes more negative.

Electric potential decreases in the direction of the electric field.
