Photosynthesis

This section covers the overall role, equation and two stages of photosynthesis.

What photosynthesis does

Photosynthesis: a process in which light energy is transferred into chemical energy stored in carbon compounds.

In plants, carbon dioxide and water are used to produce glucose, with oxygen also being formed.

Photosynthesis takes place in chloroplasts and consists of two stages:

  1. Light-dependent reaction
  2. Light-independent reaction

Light absorbed by chlorophyll provides the energy that ultimately becomes stored as chemical energy in the products of photosynthesis.
