Fatigue during repeated contraction
When skeletal muscles contract repeatedly, their ability to continue producing successful contractions may decrease. This is described as muscle fatigue.
Two factors are associated with fatigue during repeated muscular activity:
- lactate production during anaerobic respiration
- calcium ions becoming less available following repeated contractions
As fatigue develops, the same muscles become less able to maintain their previous rate of contraction.
