Protective responses
A simple reflex is a rapid, automatic response to a stimulus. Reflexes can protect an organism from harmful stimuli because the response can occur without a conscious decision being made.
The nervous pathway responsible for a reflex response is called a reflex arc.
Pupil reflex
The pupil reflex can reduce the amount of bright light reaching the retina, helping to protect it from damage.
Coughing reflex
The coughing reflex helps prevent material that could obstruct the airways from remaining there.
Why reflexes are fast
A simple reflex does not depend on the conscious parts of the brain before the response occurs. This allows the protective response to be produced rapidly.
