Reasoning and notation
Proof is a mathematical argument that moves from given assumptions, through justified logical steps, to a conclusion. The conclusion must hold for the whole set of values stated in the question, such as all integers or all even integers.
LHS means left-hand side; RHS means right-hand side. Use logical symbols to show how one statement follows from another.
| Notation | Meaning |
|---|---|
| implies : whenever is true, must be true. | |
| is equivalent to : is true if and only if is true. |
An implication gives a direction of reasoning. Use only when the reasoning works in both directions.
Number sets
| Set | Numbers included |
|---|---|
| The set of natural numbers. | |
| The set of integers. | |
| The set of rational numbers. | |
| The set of real numbers. |
The sets nest inside one another: natural numbers are integers, integers are rational, and rational numbers are real.
The symbol denotes the integers.
