Right-Angled Triangles

This section covers sine, cosine and tangent ratios for finding missing sides and angles in right-angled triangles.

Identify the sides and choose a ratio

µadjacentoppositehypotenuse
  • Hypotenuse (HH): the longest side, opposite the right angle.
  • Adjacent (AA): the side next to θ\theta, excluding the hypotenuse.
  • Opposite (OO): the side facing θ\theta.
RememberRatioFind an angle
SOHsin⁡θ=OH\sin\theta=\dfrac{O}{H}θ=sin⁡−1 ⁣(OH)\theta=\sin^{-1}\!\left(\dfrac{O}{H}\right)
CAHcos⁡θ=AH\cos\theta=\dfrac{A}{H}θ=cos⁡−1 ⁣(AH)\theta=\cos^{-1}\!\left(\dfrac{A}{H}\right)
TOAtan⁡θ=OA\tan\theta=\dfrac{O}{A}θ=tan⁡−1 ⁣(OA)\theta=\tan^{-1}\!\left(\dfrac{O}{A}\right)

Method: use SOHCAHTOA only in a right-angled triangle. Label the sides relative to the angle you are using. Choose the ratio containing the known and unknown quantities, substitute the values and rearrange. Use an inverse trigonometric function to find an angle.

Worked example: two connected triangles

The two right-angled triangles share the side x cmx\,\mathrm{cm}. Find xx and yy to 3 significant figures.

60±y8:4cm12:3cmxcm

In the left triangle, xx is adjacent to 60∘60^\circ and the hypotenuse is 12.3 cm12.3\,\mathrm{cm}:

cos⁡60∘=x12.3,x=12.3cos⁡60∘=6.15 cm.\begin{aligned}\cos60^\circ&=\frac{x}{12.3},\\x&=12.3\cos60^\circ=6.15\,\mathrm{cm}.\end{aligned}

In the right triangle, xx is opposite yy and 8.4 cm8.4\,\mathrm{cm} is adjacent:

tan⁡y=6.158.4,y=tan⁡−1 ⁣(6.158.4)≈36.2∘.\begin{aligned}\tan y&=\frac{6.15}{8.4},\\y&=\tan^{-1}\!\left(\frac{6.15}{8.4}\right)\approx36.2^\circ.\end{aligned}

Answers: x=6.15 cmx=6.15\,\mathrm{cm} and y=36.2∘y=36.2^\circ (3 s.f.).

Exam Tip: Show the substituted ratio before your answer. Use an inverse function for an angle, check degree mode and round only the final result to the requested accuracy.
