Sulfate solubility
The solubility of Group 2 sulfates decreases down the group from magnesium to barium.
Where a Group 2 sulfate is dissolved in water, it is present as aqueous Group 2 ions and sulfate ions:
| Sulfate | Relative solubility |
|---|---|
| Soluble | |
| Sparingly soluble | |
| Insoluble | |
| Insoluble and the least soluble of these four sulfates |
Calcium sulfate lies between soluble magnesium sulfate and the much less soluble sulfates lower in the group. When is formed as a reaction product, it is represented as a solid.
