The mole

This section covers the mole as a measure of amount of substance and the types of particles that can be counted in moles.

Amount of substance

The mole: an amount of substance containing 6.022×10236.022\times10^{23} specified entities. This is the same number of entities as the number of atoms in 12.00 g12.00\ \mathrm{g} of carbon-12.

The entity being counted depends on the substance. Moles can describe atoms, molecules, ions or electrons.

Substance or particle Entity being counted
Na\ce{Na} Sodium atoms
HX2\ce{H2} Hydrogen molecules
NaX+\ce{Na+} Sodium ions
eX\ce{e-} Electrons
When using moles, identify the entity being counted. For example, one mole of hydrogen atoms and one mole of HX2\ce{H2} molecules do not contain the same number of hydrogen atoms.
