Reactions With Water

01Reactions With Water

Reactivity trend

This section covers the increase in Group 2 reactivity from magnesium to barium and its link to easier electron loss.

Reactivity down Group 2

Reactivity increases from Mg to Ba. The reactions with water therefore become increasingly vigorous down the group.

This follows the decrease in ionisation energies down Group 2. The two outer electrons needed to form MX2+\ce{M^{2+}} are removed more readily, so the metals react more easily.
