This section covers converting equilibrium amounts and reaction volumes into concentrations for use in Kc calculations.
From moles to concentration
The quantities substituted into a Kc expression are equilibrium concentrations. If an equilibrium amount is supplied in moles, divide it by the total volume of the reaction mixture.

Here, c is concentration in moldm−3, n is amount in moles and V is volume in dm3.
Convert volumes from cm3 to dm3 before substituting.
Use the amount present at equilibrium, not the initial amount.
The same total mixture volume applies to each species in that equilibrium mixture.
Example
A 500cm3 mixture occupies 0.500dm3. If 0.235 mol of ethanoic acid is present at equilibrium:
[CHX3COOH]=0.5000.235=0.470moldm−3
The same conversion is applied to each other equilibrium amount required in the Kc expression.
Exam Tip: Check the volume unit before calculating concentration. A volume supplied in cm3 must first be converted to dm3.
