Empirical formula

This section covers the meaning of empirical formula and the general mole-ratio method used to determine it.

What an empirical formula shows

Empirical formula: the simplest whole-number ratio of atoms of each element in a compound.

An empirical formula can be deduced from either the masses of the elements present or their percentage composition by mass.

For example, CX2HX4OX2\ce{C2H4O2} contains carbon, hydrogen and oxygen in the ratio 2:4:22:4:2. Reducing this ratio by its common factor of 2 gives CHX2O\ce{CH2O}.

General calculation method

Convert to moles

Divide each mass or percentage value by the corresponding ArA_r.

Reduce the ratio

Divide each mole value by the smallest value in the set.

Obtain integers

If the ratio is not yet whole-numbered, multiply every value by the same suitable integer.

Empirical-formula subscripts are obtained from a ratio of amounts in moles, rather than directly from a ratio of masses.
