Breaking down ATP
During ATP hydrolysis, a phosphate is removed from ATP. The products are adenosine diphosphate (ADP) and free inorganic phosphate (Pi). ATP hydrolase, also known as ATPase, catalyses this conversion.
The conversion is rapid, allowing energy to be transferred quickly when a cell needs it. ATP hydrolysis can therefore be coupled to reactions or processes that require an energy input.
Processes supplied by ATP hydrolysis
Energy transferred through ATP hydrolysis can support:
- active transport of ions against a concentration gradient
- enzyme-controlled reactions that require energy
- muscle contraction and movement of muscle fibres
- synthetic processes such as DNA synthesis
ATP can be hydrolysed where energy is required, helping cells match energy transfer to particular cellular activities.
