Index of diversity

This section covers how the index of diversity combines species number with the number of individuals in each species.

What does the index measure?

The index of diversity is a numerical way of assessing a community by considering both how many species it contains and how many organisms belong to each of those species.

Species richness records only the number of species. The index provides more information because the distribution of individuals between those species also contributes to the value obtained.

Number of species

A community with more different species has greater species richness.

Individuals per species

The calculation also uses the abundance of each species, so dominance by one species affects the resulting index.

For this reason, the community with the greatest species richness will not necessarily have the greatest index of diversity.
