This section covers the overall role of meiosis and how two nuclear divisions produce four haploid daughter cells from one diploid parent cell.

What meiosis produces

Meiosis is a form of nuclear division in which a diploid parent cell usually produces four haploid daughter cells.

It produces haploid cells involved in sexual reproduction. The daughter cells contain half the chromosome number of the original diploid cell.

Meiosis involves two nuclear divisions:

  1. Meiosis I separates homologous chromosomes.
  2. Meiosis II separates sister chromatids.

The resulting daughter cells are genetically different from one another and from the parent cell.

The reduction in chromosome number occurs during meiosis I, when homologous chromosomes separate into different cells.
