Courtship Behaviour

01Courtship Behaviour

Species

This section covers the biological definition of a species in terms of reproduction and fertile offspring.

What is a species?

Species: a group of organisms whose members can reproduce with one another and produce fertile offspring.

The requirement for fertile offspring is important: successful production of offspring that cannot themselves reproduce would not satisfy this definition.

Exam Tip: In a species definition, state that the organisms produce fertile offspring. Simply saying that they can mate or produce offspring is not sufficient.
