This section covers how mitosis and cytokinesis produce genetically identical daughter cells.

Producing daughter cells

DNA is copied before nuclear division begins. During mitosis, the replicated chromosomes are separated so that the two developing nuclei receive matching genetic information.

Cytokinesis divides the cytoplasm and normally completes the separation into two daughter cells.

  • Both daughter cells retain the chromosome number of the parent cell.
  • The daughter cells receive genetically identical copies of the DNA.
  • Normal mitotic division therefore does not itself generate genetic variation.

Exam Tip: If asked when DNA is copied, place replication in interphase, not mitosis. Mitosis separates DNA that has already been replicated.
