Reactions With Oxygen

01Reactions With Oxygen

Oxides formed

This section covers the oxides produced when sodium, magnesium, aluminium, silicon, phosphorus and sulfur react with oxygen.

Formation of the oxides

Sodium, magnesium, aluminium, silicon, phosphorus and sulfur react with oxygen to form the required Period 3 oxides.

Element Oxide Formation equation
Sodium NaX2O\ce{Na2O} 4Na(s)+OX2(g)2NaX2O(s)\ce{4Na(s) + O2(g) -> 2Na2O(s)}
Magnesium MgO\ce{MgO} 2Mg(s)+OX2(g)2MgO(s)\ce{2Mg(s) + O2(g) -> 2MgO(s)}
Aluminium AlX2OX3\ce{Al2O3} 4Al(s)+3OX2(g)2AlX2OX3(s)\ce{4Al(s) + 3O2(g) -> 2Al2O3(s)}
Silicon SiOX2\ce{SiO2} Si(s)+OX2(g)SiOX2(s)\ce{Si(s) + O2(g) -> SiO2(s)}
Phosphorus PX4OX10\ce{P4O10} 4P(s)+5OX2(g)PX4OX10(s)\ce{4P(s) + 5O2(g) -> P4O10(s)}
Sulfur SOX2\ce{SO2} S(s)+OX2(g)SOX2(g)\ce{S(s) + O2(g) -> SO2(g)}

Sulfur can also form sulfur trioxide, SOX3\ce{SO3}.

2S(s)+3OX2(g)2SOX3(g)\ce{2S(s) + 3O2(g) -> 2SO3(g)}
Exam Tip: Know the oxide formula before balancing its formation equation, and include the state symbols.
