Polymer Properties & Uses

01Polymer Properties & Uses

Polyesters and nylon

This section covers typical properties and uses of polyester PET/Terylene and the polyamide nylon 6,6.

PET / Terylene

Poly(ethylene terephthalate), PET, is a polyester also known as Terylene. It is a thermoplastic, so heating can soften or melt it and cooling allows it to solidify again.

This means the polymer can be processed in different ways. It can be drawn or extruded into fine fibres, or shaped by moulding.

Polymer Form Typical uses
PET / Terylene Fine fibres Artificial fabrics and clothing; also used for tyre cords
PET Moulded thermoplastic Drinks bottles and other containers

Nylon 6,6

Nylon 6,6 is a synthetic polyamide. It provided a relatively inexpensive artificial alternative to silk and is used where polymer fibres are useful.

  • Nylon fibres are used in ropes and twines.
  • Nylon is used in hook-and-loop fasteners.
  • It can be combined with natural fibres in clothing and carpets to make them more durable.

Polyester

PET/Terylene can be processed as fibres or as a moulded thermoplastic, giving it a range of textile and container uses.

Polyamide

Nylon 6,6 is particularly useful as a synthetic fibre and can also be blended with natural fibres.
